The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield is a wonderfully modern gothic full of atmosphere and suspense. Margaret Lea, a young book lover and biographer is contracted by a reclusive writer Vida Winer to write her secrets. Vida has given several interviews over the years and always offers a new fabricated past for herself as imaginative as the novels she’s penned. Margaret is a stickler for the truth, and hesitates to take on this task, even though it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Margaret must live with the elderly author before she’ll reveal the violent and tragic past she’s hidden for over sixty years. As the story within a story unfolds, Margaret’s forced to look at her own life and confront her own fears. The final tale is well worth the wait.
